Everyone has been talking about the need for us to embrace
Entrepreneurship in Nigeria, and I think we the youths should embrace it more.
We have got the strength and the youthfulness to try things out; yes people
might say that for you to be successful in business you need experience, as in
you have to seek for employment, why you shouldn't start a business, all out of good
intentions only. But before you gulp down all that, think for a while about
Bill Gates who left Harvard to start Microsoft; Michael Dell who left the
University of Texas to start Dell; Fred Smith who, while attending Yale,
received a "C" (More or less like our D in Nigeria) on his Fedex
business plan and decided to start his business anyway; Milton Hershey who
opened his first candy shop when he was 18; Steve Jobs who left Reed University
to start Apple; William Hewlett and David Packard who started HP out of a
garage after graduating from Stanford, our own Aliko Dangote who started out in
business as a teenager. What would have happened if they were convinced by
these lame arguments and backed away from their business plan? We would have had to live without a Dell, a
Microsoft, an HP an Apple.
Good enough many of us are
already graduates out of necessity waiting for one white collar job or the
other. The truth is that young people have fresh perspectives on the world.
This perspective helps them to see many opportunities that till now have not
been exploited. If we do not travel down the road, how do we know what is at
the end of it; perhaps you end up becoming the next celebrated business icon in
your community if not in the nation or even in the world. The world is getting
messier by the day, different kind of problems are showing up waiting to be
solved. This period of economic downturn in Nigeria is the right time we have
the opportunity to lead, we don’t have to all start up with politics there are
several areas we youths can turn around our economic woes. Nigeria is our country;
it is more of our responsibility as youths to make this country workout than
any other categories considering the fact that we make up the biggest chunk of
the nation’s population. Come to think of it, if 5 million of us startup 1
business respectively and we employ 3 staffs each in the first year then we
would have reduced the number of unemployed youths in Nigeria by 15 million. If
each of these businesses doubles their staffs by the following year, then we
have successfully helped 30 million Nigerians out of poverty. NIGERIA CAN BE
BETTER AGAIN, LET THE YOUTHS ARISE
